As a school counselor, I follow the ASCA national model. ASCA stands for American School Counselor Association. Under this model, it recommends school counselors to meet students' needs in the following areas:
Academics, personal/social, and careers.
One way I meet these needs is by teaching lessons in every students' classroom one time per month. My lessons always fall under one of these three categories. Topics for lessons include, bullying, career research, anger management, conflict resolution, getting along with peers, making friends, safety, identifying and expression of feelings, and respecting guest teachers.
I am always available to counsel students who are having problems in school. It is my responsibility to make sure they are safe and receiving the help they need while in the school environment.
I also run small groups based on the needs of the students.
I do preliminary testing for the gifted program to see if students who are referred by their teacher or parent are eligible for the program. I run a program called Peer Mediation at Park Elementary. It is a program designed for our fourth grade students who demonstrate leadership skills and are role models for the rest of the school. The fourth grade students are called Peer Mediators and they help our staff monitor at recess to ensure the students are playing appropriately and staying safe.
I also run a kickball program for third and fourth grade students after school on Wednesdays from 3:00-3:20. Third grade is every first and third Wednesday and fourth grade is available every second and fourth Wednesday.
